History of Miami
The Tequesta Indians lived in the area for millennia until being practically wiped off by European diseases and violence brought on by two centuries of Spanish rule in Florida. In 1870, near the site of Ft. Lauderdale, the city was established. During the Seminole Indian Wars of 1835, the city of Dallas was created. The name “Mayaimi,” which means “large water” in India, is most likely the source of the city’s name.
Miami is the only city in the United States that a woman has developed. In 1891, a Clevelander named Julia Tuttle arrived and purchased several hundred acres on the Miami River’s banks. She urged Henry M. Flagler, a New York banker, to expand his Florida East Coast Railroad to Miami in 1896, the year the city was founded, because of the area’s tremendous potential. Miami Harbor was dredged, the Royal Palm Hotel was created, and Flagler promoted the site as a winter playground. Tourists flocked to the city, and by 1910, it was a booming tourist destination.
